Bride’s name: Elizabeth Rowan Hammond

Groom’s name: Michael Christopher Kunder

Occupations: Michael is an ER technician and combat medic and Liz is studying for her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

How they met: When Liz was coaching C-Team volleyball at South High School, one of her athletes, Lauren, suggested that her older brother should take Liz on a date. “We agreed to go to lunch together, mostly to appease Lauren and end the prodding. We hit it off so well – we have hardly been apart since!”

The proposal: “On a very cold day in October, we went down to the beach at Kincaid Park with one of our dogs. We were half-frozen and expected at Michael’s house for dinner. I was ready to start heading back to the car, but Michael was insistent on trying to get a photograph of the two of us on the bluff,” says Liz. After their phones and camera batteries died, Liz started to leave. Michael, who had been planning on capturing his proposal on film, shouted after her, “Baby, will you marry me?” “I couldn’t have been more surprised. I dropped our dog’s leash and ran into his arms!”

Number of guests: 120

Wedding colors: Ivory, gold, Victorian lilac, sage.

Most memorable moment…
For her: “How light I felt all day – buoyed by all the love around.”
For him: “The first look – it was magical, and when I turned around, seeing my bride for the first time in the bouncing sunlight, everything was real and surreal at the same time.”

Funniest moment: Before the couple hit the dance floor for their first dance, the best man had conspired with the DJ to play "She’s My Kind of Rain." “We love that song but had opted not to dance to it because it’s too long. Our faces when we heard the first few chords of the unexpected song were hilarious. We managed to keep it together through one spin, laughed a lot and then welcomed everyone else onto the dance floor to enjoy the five-minute-long first dance.”

Unique aspects of the day: Cornhole boards created by the groom, a cigar bar with Cuban cigars and hand-rolled cigars brought from Afghanistan by a groomsmen, and the flower/antler arrangement at their ceremony.

Three words that best describe their day: “Elegant, rustic fantasy.”

If they had the chance to do it again, what they would do differently: “We wish we could’ve included our dogs in our wedding day!”

What Liz loves most about her husband: “His willingness to undertake big adventures with me, his dreamy blue eyes, and the way they crinkle when he smiles.”

What Michael loves most about his wife: “Her adventurous attitude and stunning good looks.”

Best advice for a couple planning a wedding? “Remember that, above all else, a wedding is simply about celebrating your love for one another and sharing it with people whose company makes your heart happy.”
