After being study partners and friends at UAA, Lydia and Keoni moved on to lead their own lives hundreds of miles apart – Lydia as a nurse in Anchorage, and Keoni back at his home in Unalakleet. The two were reunited unexpectedly when Keoni was medevacked to Anchorage after a dirt-biking accident. Lydia visited him while in the hospital, and a few months later, he asked her to be his girlfriend. During the wedding ceremony, Lydia and Keoni’s pastor asked the couple to turn around to appreciate everyone in the audience. “It was a moving experience to be able to take a moment from the ceremony to peer into the crowd of people we love,” says Lydia. The couple also took time to remember their mothers: “Both of our moms passed well before their time, so during the ceremony we lit two candles representing them and their love. Although our moms were not there physically we felt their presence and love the whole day.” They also incorporated their Alaska Native heritage into the ceremony with traditional, handmade garments from Lydia’s grandmother. “My uncle who walked me down the aisle wore a qaspeq, mukluks and a parka that my late grandmother had made,” says Lydia. “I also wore my late mother's mukluks as my ‘something borrowed’ to symbolize that she was with me on our wedding day.”
