Markie L. Johnson and Brendyn G. Shiflea
August 7, 2010
Markie and Brendyn both attended the same high school, but chemistry never sparked between the two until they saw each other five years later at the Alaska Zoo. Ever since, they have been inseparable. While moving into their first home in Kenai, Markie came home to find ribbon strung across the house with significant memories of their relationship reflected on it. At the end of the chain, Markie found a dozen roses, a note reading “the proposal” as the final memory, and Brendyn on one knee asking for her hand in marriage. About 200 guests witnessed their nuptials at Kenai Landing, an historic Alaskan venue. “My favorite moment of our wedding was when Markie first came into view walking down the aisle,” recalls Brendyn. “Her cousin was singing and playing the piano, I was surrounded by all of my family and closest friends, and she looked absolutely stunning being led up the aisle by her father.” More than 200 different shades of pink Gerber daisies filled the room. Gifts for the guests were custom drink koozies that read: “To have and to hold and to keep your drink cold.” Brendyn’s relatives played a couple of songs for the newlyweds – his uncles on drums and guitar while his aunts sang. “They were amazing,” says Markie. “It was so great to see the talent that my new family had, and it was such a fun moment to dance with my new husband.”
