Melaina King and Luke Johnson

August 22, 2020

Luke and Melaina met at college, where their dorm rooms were right next door to each other. “We were best friends for years,” says Melaina. The couple originally planned their wedding to be in New York, with their families. “When the pandemic hit," says Melaina, “we had to change plans. We decided to elope in one of the most remote places! Our dream has long been to tour Alaska, so that's what we did. We got to pop champagne on a glacier, paddleboard in an alpine lake wearing our wedding clothes, and share our first dance on a mountaintop. It was a dream!” Because they were unable to have their families at their wedding, Luke and Melaina facetimed with them while getting ready in the morning and again after they eloped. “Our families and friends also put together the most amazing home video toasting us and congratulating us that we watched the morning of our wedding,” says Melaina. “The two of us each wore something special from our families to make it feel like they were really part of the day too.” Melaina wore the necklace her mother wore on her wedding day and Luke wore his dad’s pocket watch. “Although it was just the two of us, we will never forget how loved and supported we felt that day.”
