Lauren & Matt
September 3, 4, 6, 2024
Bride’s name: Lauren Truax
Groom’s name: Matthew Scherer
How they met: “We met in college. We both went to the United States Air Force Academy. We had freshman chemistry together, but we didn't connect until our senior year. We started as colleagues and that grew into a strong friendship before we decided to take the chance on dating right before graduation. We survived four years of long distance while we worked on our doctorates!”
Number of guests: 10
Wedding colors: Jewel tones: peacock green, dark fuchsia pink, dark burgundy, royal blue, deep purple, and gold accents
Unique and special aspects of the day: “We are introverted people and we love to adventure, so we knew from the start we didn't want the typical wedding celebration. We ended up splitting the celebration amongst three days: a first look day where we took a private helicopter charter and sailing charter in Seward; a ceremony day with family where we had an intimate ceremony before gathering for a shared meal in a cozy cabin; and a private vow day where we took another helicopter charter to explore Knik glacier.”
Most memorable moment…
For her: “The pouring rain on a ceremony day with family! We were originally supposed to do a combo heli/sail on this day, but the weather forecast was a downpour. Our vendors rallied to give us this experience the day before instead which meant the absolute world to us. Flying to an iceberg lagoon that we had all to ourselves was an experience I will never forget. We kayaked on the water and it was so warm with the sun beating down on us! At first I was disappointed because the beach where we were supposed to have our ceremony was completely obscured by fog. We pivoted to the forest and I honestly think it turned out even better. The greenery was so vibrant and our families were so flexible that it made our plan B the dream ceremony I didn't know I wanted!”
For him: “Seeing Lauren on the Knik glacier for the first time. She was taking a few portrait shots and I got to stand back and admire her amongst this grand scenery. A beautiful girl in a beautiful place. She looked so stunning and we both couldn't believe how vibrant the blue glacial pools looked in person – they completely lived up to the hype. That moment reinforced that our wedding was just the first of so many adventures in beautiful places together.”
Funniest moment: “During our ceremony, Lauren (very confidently) put Matthew's wedding band on his right hand. No one said anything during the ceremony and it wasn't until we were having our brunch afterwards and went to take a cute phone pic at the table that Lauren realized!”
Three words that best describe their day: “Intimate, luxurious, wild.”
If they had the chance to do it again, what they would do differently: “We would definitely hire a coordinator, at least for the ceremony day with family!” says Lauren. “I am very type A and even though I was able to manage the curveball the weather threw us, it would have been much less stressful if I had a coordinator do it for me (who probably would've foreseen that we needed a third day for everything we wanted to fit in, anyway!).”
Best advice for a couple planning their wedding: “Don't be afraid to do something different! We knew from even before getting engaged that a huge party wasn't our vibe (we're always the first to leave a wedding, sorry!). The little details that are unique to your story will make your day so much memorable and they are worth investing in. Every moment of the day will pass so quickly; invest in a photographer to capture every bit of the day (or days!).”
